Last weekend The Group of Creators put on a show for SA Menswear Week that could blow your socks off. #SAMW A/W 22 gave young South African designers the opportunity to showcase their work on the runway. Along with sponsors like Deetlefs Wine Estate and the amazing team at OPIA Experience, the event was one fashion-lovers of Cape Town will remember.
Graduate Collections and Week of Fashion
The first shows started on Friday afternoon with the Cape Town Fashion Council Graduate Collections. Graduates from fashion schools in the country had the opportunity to showcase their studies’ work on the runway. A new and exciting element that was added to this season‘s schedule, which took place on Friday, was Cape Town Week of Fashion. This show put the very talented women’s wear designers of Cape Town in the spotlight. Designers included Habit, Leigh Schubert, Jacques la Grange and other impressive names.
Menswear A/W '22
Vincii had the opportunity to attend the Saturday show which was dedicated to menswear. Ten of Cape Town’s most talented upcoming designers showcased their collections.
Evident themes included black and white patterned fabrics, as seen in Vyagor and House of Waalid’s collections, as well as crimson and hot pink that Ruan Goosen and XHVNTI used in their ranges. The use of props and accessories was also an exciting touch that Xolani Mawande and Masa Mara added to their collections.
After seeing the trends in Europe for some time now it was great that more “feminine” pieces also made their way into the men’s collections of South African designers. Nao Serati’s work stood out in this regard.
The highlights
Our favourite moments of the day were when the designers came onto the runway after their collection was shown. It hits deep knowing that each designer spent hours crafting each piece in their collection and that it is a work of art and self-expression. It is in these moments that we regain sight of our purpose as a local fashion platform.
